CWDM (Coarse Wavelength Division Multiplexing) allows carrying up to 18 channels into single fiber. ITU-T G.694.2 deifnes a 18 wavelenths grid covering a very wide broadband spectrum from 1270 up to 1610nm.

The defined 20nm separation between wavelengths allows simpler optical active

and passive (mux, demux, add/drop, etc) components to be used.

DWDM ( Dense wavelength division multiplexing (DWDM) technology that puts data from different light sources together on an optical fiber, with each signal carried at the same time on its own separate light wavelength. Using DWDM, up to 80 (and theoretically more) separate wavelengths or channels of data can be multiplexed into a lightstream transmitted on a single optical fiber.
